Interesting and Somewhat Unique Containers

Today I'm joining Alison over at The Polohouse for her "Favorites on the First" linky party.  This month's subject features favorite containers.  I'm not sure if Alison only wanted one favorite container submission from each participant, but I decided to throw in as many as I could find around my house.  Here goes.

My mother used this old marble box for her face powder.  (This is the same type of marble that I would love to have for my kitchen countertops some day.)  Now I use it to hold quarters:

My great-grandmother used this black japanned box to hold letters:

This old creamware pitcher was my grandmother's.  It's completely cracked and chipped…just the way I like it:

This green majolica compote holds some of my marble fruit:

Oh no!  Another collection…  As usual, my sweet,
long-suffering husband hasn't noticed it yet.  Most of these metal dogs were made in Germany back in the 30s, but a few are reproductions.  I think the miniature spiral stairway is the perfect "container":

This old bucket has been reconditioned as a fire bucket:

I use this Waterford biscuit barrel to hold limes in our bar area:

I showed this miniature fire fender in a previous post.  One of my fabulous readers told me that these antique fenders were carried by traveling salesman as an example of the full-size fender.  If the customer purchased a fender, he would be shipped a regular size.  It was obviously much easier for the traveling salesman to carry the miniature than the full-size:

So there you have it.  If you've never visited The Polohouse, you should do so ASAP!  Alison is my hero; her blog is my inspiration.

Thanks, Alison, for another fun party!

  2. Love the containers! My favorite is the stair displaying the dogs - love a dog collection. I also like the fender - I remember having seen it on your blog before, and I think it's so cute corraling your old books. BTW, I have now found two tartan books!

  6. HI Kathy!

    Thanks for the sweet comments.
Oh my goodness, I am your blog's stalker!
Look at all the plaids hiding in each of these
photos! I immediately opened a new window when I
saw that book you have called The Scottish World...
have never seen that one before but I need it! NEEEED it!
One more plaid layer for my home, and I don't have a drop of
    Scottish in me. :)

Thanks for sharing all these lovely images. The black Japanned box was cute enough and then you opened it to share the contents! What memories!

Those sweet pups, the salesman's sample fender, etc etc etc ! So many pretty things. Thanks so much for sharing your favorites... that's what FonF is all about!
